I stepped on something... now whole toe feels bruised.?

I stepped on something yesterday and it stung really bad. Made my way to the bathroom and pinched it so it bled, making sure there wasn't a sliver or anything in it. I didn't see anything and it was just a small cut so I cleansed it with water and left it open as the bleeding stopped quickly. I wore my padded flip flops because it stung to walk on the hard wood floors. My boyfriend was able to give me a foot mage lastnight fine. I woke up this morning and from where the cut happened, just below my toe, to the middle of my toe feels badly bruised. (Hurts to walk normal on it) The cut looks healed. Any ideas on why it hurts so much?
