Honestly, you're in college? You're acting like you're in middle school. Cut the girls some slack. If they smile at you, say hi or smile back. People change as they mature, and that's likely what's happened to these girls you see. People smile at people they recognize from cl or labs or the campus. And if you stop thinking about yourself so much and focus on other people, communication would become easier for you. I highly recommend you get the Dale Carnegie book (can't remember what it's called "How to Influence... blah blah). It's a clic and could go a long way in helping you out.
