89 Pontiac firebird starts sometimes, othertimes it doesn't HELP?

I'm thinking of buying a firebird from a guy for $1200 and he's telling that sometimes it doesn't start but when it Runs very well. What is the problem? I really want this car and does anyone know an estimate for the repair cost? It also has 131,000 original miles.
