I planted a cutting from a shrub, a week ago now it has died, why?

i took a cutting from the frangee pangee tree....put some cow manure and potty mix in the hole then planted the cutting in the hole...covered with top soil,and watered in good.....why did it die? i want to plant a gravilliea in the same hold...is it wise for me to do that, or should i plant it in a differnt hole?
