When did blacks switch their presidential allegiance from the Republicans to the Democrats - and WHY?

Blacks naturally supported presidential candidates for the Republican Party after the Civil War and opposed the party of slavery, the Democrats. This allegiance held for decades, then something happened that made them switch to the Democrats and start voting for Democratic presidential candidates. What was it that caused this to happen, and which Democratic presidential candidate was the beneficiary of this new found support?
